Announcing Corporate Rock-Off 2012!

// March 5th, 2012 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

It’s a chance to let what’s left of your hair down. Reclaim your right to party. It’s like a briefcase full of rock. It’s the Corporate Rock-Off II: The Re-Rockening—your opportunity to release your inner rocker for a night. And all the proceeds go to a couple of great causes—including, if you’re lucky (and awesome), your own favorite charity.

Corporate Rock-Off is a one-night-only battle of the bands featuring acts comprised of musicians and players from Indianapolis-area businesses and large corporations. The Rock-Off is a fundraising event for Second Story, our Indianapolis-based non-profit creative writing workshop and tutoring program created help kids learn to love writing.  Learn more at secondstoryindy.org.

So shed your pinstripes slink into your spandex. Call that one dude in accounting who has a drum kit and an understanding spouse. It’s time to stop getting down to business and just get down. On Friday, April 13, someone’s gonna get lucky.

The Location:

  • Service Center for Contemporary Culture and Community:  - 3819 Lafayette Road, right outside Lafayette Square Mall. It’s Indianapolis’s newest, coolest, most community-minded event space. (It’s also Second Story’s home. Come rock out and see the most excellent cause you’re supporting.)

The Time:

  • Friday, April 13, 2012. Music begins at 7:30 pm SHARP. We expect the show will run until about 11. Later if there’s additional rocking to be done.

The Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) key members of each band must be currently employed by the same business. Where you find the rest of the band is up to you.  If you are short players, Corporate Rock-Off offers the chance to enhance your act with rented “ringers.”  (See below.)
  • All business must be located or have an office in Indiana.
  • This is rock show. Your band must consist of a minimum core of players to comprise what is considered to be a rock act. No magicians, no single-person performances on the pan flute, and no prerecorded backing tracks. And no disco.

The Contest:

  • Eight bands will be selected to perform by Second Story’s Corporate Rocking Committee.
  • Each band will play a single 15-minute set, with a 10-minute changeover between sets. Bands will play at:
    • 7:05
    • 7:30
    • 7:55
    • 8:20
    • 8:45
    • 9:10
    • 9:35
    • 10:00
  • Time-slots will be determined by the funds raised by each band. Time-slots for bands that raise the minimum entry fee will be drawn at random.
  • All songs will be chosen by the band.
  • Every Corporate Rock-off ticket holder is entitled to fill out one ballot to choose his or her favorite bands. The winner will be determined by a combination of audience vote (3/4) and the votes of three Mystery Judges (1/4).
  • After a 30-minute break for voting and vote tabulation, the winner will be named, and will be offered the opportunity to resume rocking.

The Prizes:

  • The Coveted Golden Stapler Award.
  • The opportunity to resume rocking.
  • A guaranteed slot at Tonic Ball 11.
  • Time to record one song at Queensize Studios.
  • The envy of all your less-rocking corporate rivals.

The Entry Fee

  • The entry fee for Corporate Rock-Off is a minimum of $500. This fee can be donated by your company, raised through pledges from friends and colleagues, or generated by a car wash or bake sale, for all we care. It all goes to a great cause.
  • You may enter with more than $500—and it’s to your advantage to do so. Bands raising more than the $500 entry fee will get first choices time-slots. Want to play first? Last? Somewhere in the middle? The more you raise, the better your chances of getting the slot you want.

The Details:

  • Entry deadline is Friday, March 23, 2012. Bands will be notified of their selection by Wednesday, March 28.
  • All bands must report to Service Center, with instruments, at 6:00 pm on April 13 for load-in and to draw for set times.
  • Once set times are assigned, bands must report back no less than one hour prior to their assigned time.
  • Bands must pack up and exit the stage promptly upon completion of set.
  • A backline will be provided, consisting of two guitar amps, bass cabinet, basic drum kit, and direct I/O.
  • Drummers should bring their own throne, cymbals, snare, and sticks.
  • All bands are responsible for their own instruments, cables, and pedals.
  • What you play is up to you. Remember, this is a rock show.  Smooth jazz and/or hip-hop will likely be frowned upon.
  • Promoting this event to friends and fans is strongly encouraged. Judging will be ballot-based and will consist of 75% fan vote and 25% from three anonymous judges.  Ballots will encourage voters to vote for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

The Caveat:

  • Entry fee is $500 per band.
  • Bands are encouraged to raise even more via sponsorships from fans, their company, or private donations.

 The Cool Part:

  • Need a ringer? Need a shredder to pull off “Purple Rain” and don’t know one? You’re in luck. Corporate Rock-Off offers you the chance to enhance your sound by renting a seasoned musician: guitarists, vocalists, percussionists, etc. How do you get access? More donations, of course! You can add up to two ringers to your act for a cost of $100 per musician. Tell us what you need, and we’ll promise you a pro. Contact Matt Mays at matt@maysentertainment.com.

The Winnings:

  • 100% all ticket sales (and other proceeds) go to Second Story in the name of the winning band and their company.
